On My Honor

On My Honor

Another great slow song, On My Honor is popular to sing in troop meetings, ceremonies, and at camp.  We didn’t sing it so much at camp since, although it was Girl Scout camp, not every girl that attended was actually a Girl Scout.  Many included their registration fees in their fees to attend camp, but never bothered to join troops in their local areas.  I think they’re missing out by doing this, but at least they’re at camp!

Chorus:
On my honor I will try,
There’s a duty to be done and I say aye,
There’s a reason here for a reason up above,
My honor is to try and my duty is to love.

People don’t need to know my name,
If I’ve done any harm, then I’m to blame.
If I’ve helped anyone, then I’ve helped me,
If I’ve opened up my eyes to see.

I’ve tucked away a song or two,
When your feeling low, there’s one for you,
If you need a friend, then I will come,
And there’s so many more where I come from.

(Chorus)

Come with me where a fire burns bright,
We can even see better by candle’s light,
We can find more meaning in a campfire’s glow
Than we ever learned in a year or so.

We’ve made a promise to always keep,
And we pray night falls before we sleep.
We’ll be Girl Scouts together and when we’re gone,
We’ll still be trying and a singing this song.

(Chorus)

Barges

Barges

There are several versions of this song, but at camp we always sang the original version.  It was a popular song to round out the evening before bed… slow and quiet and wouldn’t get the girls all riled up. It’s sung in a flowing manner.

Out of my window looking in the night,
I can see the barges’ flickering light.
Silently flows the river to the sea,
And the barges too go silently.

Barges, I would like to go with you,
I would like to sail the ocean blue,
Barges, have you treasures in hold?
Do you fight with pirates brave and bold?

Out of my window looking in the night,
I can see the barges’ flickering light,
Starboard shines green and port is glowing red,
You can see them flickering far ahead.

Barges, I would like to go with you,
I would like to sail the ocean blue,
Barges, have you treasures in hold?
Do you fight with pirates brave and bold?

Rise Up O Flame

Rise Up O Flame

Rise Up O Flame is a great song to sing at any camp out as the fire is being lit.  It’s intended to be sung in an eight-part round, but we usually just cut it off once the fire was nice and roaring.  If it took too long, sometimes we’d sing it until we were sick of it or we’d usually cut it off and start it up again once the counselors broke to figure out why the dang fire wasn’t lighting! There was a superstition I was told about as a young scout that if you didn’t sing the song, you’d have problems lighting the fire. My “research” did not bear this out, but it’s a nice tale for the campers!

Rise up, O Flame by thy light glowing,
Show to us beauty, vision and joy.

Make New Friends

Make New Friends

Interestingly, in doing my research I found another verse to this song that I’d never been taught!  We always just sang the first verse in our meetings, and even in going away to Girl Scout camp, I never learned another version.  I wonder if this is a regional thing?  If you know, please share!

Make new friends, but keep the old,
One is silver and the other’s gold.
A circle’s round, it has no end,
That’s how long I want to be your friend.

Friendships come and friendships go,
But we’ll be together, this I know.
You’ll need me and I’ll need you,
And together we will make it through.

Ants Go Marching

Ants Go Marching

The Ants Go Marching is a fun countdown song, starting at ants marching one by one and going all the way up to ten by ten.  It’s a great song for younger girls who are learning to count as it gives them a chance to get some practice in!  Not that in the seventh verse, the action is “pray to heaven” but you can easily change that if you don’t want to use the religious reference.  Just make sure the last word rhymes with seven, though I’m having a tough time thinking of alternatives, to be honest!  Try www.RhymeZone.com for suggestions!

The ants go marching one by one
Hurah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one
Hurrah, Hurrah!
The ants go marching one by one
The little one stopped to suck his thumb
And they all go marching
Down
To the ground
To get out of the rain
Bum, bum, bum

The ants go marching two by two
Hurah, hurrah
The ants go marching two by two
Hurrah, Hurrah!
The ants go marching two by two
The little one stopped to tie his shoe
And they all go marching
Down
To the ground
To get out of the rain
Bum, bum, bum

The ants go marching three by three
Hurah, hurrah
The ants go marching three by three
Hurrah, Hurrah!
The ants go marching three by three
The little one stopped to climb a tre
And they all go marching
Down
To the ground
To get out of the rain
Bum, bum, bum

The ants go marching four by four
Hurah, hurrah
The ants go marching four by four
Hurrah, Hurrah!
The ants go marching four by four
The little one stopped to slam the door
And they all go marching
Down
To the ground
To get out of the rain
Bum, bum, bum

The ants go marching five by five
Hurah, hurrah
The ants go marching five by five
Hurrah, Hurrah!
The ants go marching five by five
The little one stopped to talk some Jive
And they all go marching
Down
To the ground
To get out of the rain
Bum, bum, bum

The ants go marching six by six
Hurah, hurrah
The ants go marching six by six
Hurrah, Hurrah!
The ants go marching six by six
The little one stopped to pick up sticks
And they all go marching
Down
To the ground
To get out of the rain
Bum, bum, bum

The ants go marching seven by seven
Hurah, hurrah
The ants go marching seven by seven
Hurrah, Hurrah!
The ants go marching seven by seven
The little one stopped to pray to heaven
And they all go marching
Down
To the ground
To get out of the rain
Bum, bum, bum

The ants go marching eight by eight
Hurah, hurrah
The ants go marching eight by eight
Hurrah, Hurrah!
The ants go marching eight by eight
The little one stopped to close the gate
And they all go marching
Down
To the ground
To get out of the rain
Bum, bum, bum

The ants go marching nine by nine
Hurah, hurrah
The ants go marching nine by nine
Hurrah, Hurrah!
The ants go marching nine by nine
The little one stopped to pick up a dime
And they all go marching
Down
To the ground
To get out of the rain
Bum, bum, bum

The ants go marching ten by ten
Hurah, hurrah
The ants go marching ten by ten
Hurrah, Hurrah!
The ants go marching ten by ten
The little one stopped to pluck a hen
And they all go marching
Down
To the ground
To get out of the rain
Bum, bum, bum
