Moonshadow
Yes, the song Moonshadow was made famous by Cat Stevens, though I learned this song at camp long before I knew anything about Cat Stevens. We sang it frequently by the fire as some of the last songs of the evening to wind down before bed.

On My Honor
Another great slow song, On My Honor is popular to sing in troop meetings, ceremonies, and at camp. We didn’t sing it so much at camp since, although it was Girl Scout camp, not every girl that attended was actually a Girl Scout. Many included their registration fees in their fees to attend camp, but never bothered to join troops in their local areas. I think they’re missing out by doing this, but at least they’re at camp!

Barges
There are several versions of this song, but at camp we always sang the original version. It was a popular song to round out the evening before bed… slow and quiet and wouldn’t get the girls all riled up. It’s sung in a flowing manner.

Rise Up O Flame
Rise Up O Flame is a great song to sing at any camp out as the fire is being lit. It’s intended to be sung in an eight-part round, but we usually just cut it off once the fire was nice and roaring. If it took too long, sometimes we’d sing it until we were sick of it or we’d usually cut it off and start it up again once the counselors broke to figure out why the dang fire wasn’t lighting! There was a superstition I was told about as a young scout that if you didn’t sing the song, you’d have problems lighting the fire. My “research” did not bear this out, but it’s a nice tale for the campers!

Make New Friends
Interestingly, in doing my research I found another verse to this song that I’d never been taught! We always just sang the first verse in our meetings, and even in going away to Girl Scout camp, I never learned another version. I wonder if this is a regional thing? If you know, please share!
