Paper-Embellished Luminaries

Paper-Embellished Luminaries are a great project for both younger girls and older girls.  You can use these luminance bags to decorate for a awards ceremony, or theme them for a holiday to decorate a house hold.  This project shouldn’t require much skill and should be able to be done in about 45 minutes.  You can make a trip out of going to a craft store to learn more about scrapbooking papers and let the girls pick out their favorite sheets, or buy a multi-pack using a theme.  Another alternative to the decorative scrapbooking paper is plain construction paper.

  1. Wash glass containers.
  2. Measure height of glass containers.  Cut a piece of scrapbook paper 12″ plus the height.  Use decorative-edge scissors along bottom and top edge.  Center this piece round the glass container.  It will fit the 3″ square glass overlapping by 1/8″.  On the large containers, the 12″ width will not cover completely.  Measure the height and cut 2 pieces, 12″ wide plus the height.  Wrap the tape measure around the containers to get the amount needed to cover completely and add 1/8″.  Cut this measurement from the second piece.
  3. Wrap scrapbook paper around glass containers and use your fingers to crease on all corners.  Remove paper and crease all folds.
  4. To make the cutout designs, place the paper punch along the folds to reach the center section and along the corner edges.  Make soft folds in the center of the paper to punch this area.  Align the punch along the soft folds.  Punch firmly.
  5. Once you have punched the entire area, including the extra piece, use double-sided tape to hold paper to the glass, beginning with the largest piece.
  6. Tape ribbon in place overlapping the ends slightly.  Secure with double sided tape.
  7. Place flame-less candles inside for a soft glow.

  1. Use flame-less candles instead of real candles.  The paper is highly flammable, of course, so the flame-less candles will make the project safe for girls of all ages.
  2. Paper trimmers for cutting the large initial pieces should be used by adults when working with younger girls, or with adult supervision when working with older girls.

Clothespin Reindeer

This Clothespin Reindeer is a great easy craft for younger girls.  I used to make these with my grandmother too, so it’s a great family craft.  You can use these very basic instructions or allow the girls to embellish the reindeer clothespins more with paints, glitter, ribbons, etc.  Super easy and super cheap.

  1. Paint wood area of three clothespins Honey Brown.  Let dry.
  2. Position two clothespins side-by-side and adhere with glue.
  3. Position third clothespin in opposite direction and adhere to small end of double clothespins for reindeer head.
  4. Position and adhere eyes and pom pom nose.

Gobble Gobble T-Shirts

Gobble Gobble T-Shirts are great crafts around Thanksgiving.  As well, this craft can very easily be done while teaching the girls more about the origins of American Thanksgiving and the importance of tradition and family.  If t-shirts are a little outside the budget for your troop during this down economy, you can change the medium to poster board and make the same design on posters for decorations during Thanksgiving.

Materials NeededMaterials Needed:

  1. Place the t-shirt board inside of the t-shirt.
  2. Use the sponge brush to place paint colors on the girl’s hand and fingers.
  3. Have the girl steadily place her hand on the shirt to print the turkey, pressing gently on each finger to make sure the paint prints.  You may need to hold her hand to help keep the print from smearing.
  4. Carefully lift her hand straight up off the shirt to avoid smudging.  Immediately wash her hands with soap and water.
  5. Brush red paint on foam alphabet stamps and press on shirt and let dry.
  6. Use fabric paint to add detail to turkey, such as legs, beak and eye and let dry.

  1. Adult supervision is required at all times.
  2. Ensure that all paint is dry before you let the girls take their t-shirts home.
  3. Double check that all paints used are nontoxic.

Remember that if you don’t have a t-shirt board, you can place a sheet of wax paper inside the shirt to prevent transfer of the paint.

Clay Picture Frame & Pencil Cup Set

This can be a fun project for older girls with a little more motor skills for the modeling of the clay.  Younger girls can still have a great time with this, but the finished product will not be as polished.  You can make the frame and cup themed for school mascots, holidays, seasons, or any other theme you want to tie a craft into.

  1. Flatten a piece of Model Magic® slightly larger than the frame, about ¼” thick.
  2. Cover the frame with the Model Magic®.
  3. Decorate the frame with additional pieces of Model Magic® as desired.
  4. Allow the modeling compound to air-dry.

  1. Roll a piece of Model Magic® flat, about ¼” thick.
  2. Cover a plastic cup with the Model Magic®.
  3. Decorate the cup with additional pieces of Model Magic® as desired.

  2. Have tweezers on hand in case of splinters from the wooden frame.

You can also use the Model Magic® to make figures for the tops of pencils to match the set.

Sand Art Magnets

Sand Art Magnets are a great project for Daisies, Brownies, and even Junior Girl Scouts, but the project can take up to an hour, so if your meetings are only half an hour long, you might want to do the painting during one meeting and the sand embellishing during the next.  This is a messy project with the sand, so be sure to have smocks or old adult shirts ready to minimize the chance of stains on the girls’ clothes.  You will also want to have old newspapers down on the tables to make clean up of the excess sand easier.

This is an easy project to theme.  Standard unfinished wooden shapes can be bought in multi-packs but you can also go to craft stores to get larger unique shapes one at a time, such as horseshoes, flowers, animals, etc.   For example, if the girls are in the process of learning about insects for a badge, you can easily get bees or ladybug shaped wood piece to paint.  Using a theme will also help limit how much paint and sand you buy to keep to the colors of the theme and project – for instance you don’t need purple if all the girls are making bees or ladybugs.

  1. Use the foam brush to paint the shapes in the desired colors.  Let the paint dry.
  2. Use the paint brushes to paint lines of glue onto the painted shapes where you want the sand to adhere to.
  3. Sprinkle the sand onto the wet glue and shake the excess sand off onto a newspaper or scrap paper to catch the sand.
  4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for each color sand you use.  It works best to use one color of sand at a time to avoid mixing the sands together.  Start with the darkest and end with the lightest.
  5. Once the glue is completely dry, attach magnets to the back of each and let dry before using.  You can glue individual craft magnets onto the wood pieces or use magnetic strips with adhesive backing.  Usually the strips come in a roll that can be cut into pieces the right size.

  1. Make sure to use glue that is kid-safe.  Not only does it work the best, but you don’t want to use a toxic glue.
  2. For added stability in the magnets, an adult can use a hot glue gun to attach the magnets.
  3. Look at the packaging for the acrylic paint and make sure you’re using a non-toxic, kid friendly paint.  If you cannot find kid-friendly acrylic paint, ask someone at your local craft store for a recommendation on a non-toxic paint that will work for this project.

Consider how thick the wood pieces are before deciding what kind of magnet to use.  You want to make sure that the magnet won’t fail when stuck to a refrigerator – nothing is worse than a girl bringing home her wonderful creation only to put it on the fridge and have it fall to the floor and break 🙁
