Kookaburra

Kookaburra

This is a fun song we learned when learning about Australia for an International Day festival one year.  I’m told it’s a popular song for children down under.  When I was younger, I thought Kookaburra was a name for a Koala Bear, but it’s actually a large (11-17″) bird native to Australia and New Guinea.  Kookaburras are known for their loud, unique call which sounds a lot like a human laugh, hence the song lyrics.  For more information on kookaburras, check out Wikipedia.

Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree
Merry merry king of the bush is he
Laugh Kookaburra, laugh Kookaburra
Gay your life must be

Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree
Eating all the gumdrops he can see
Stop Kookaburra, stop Kookaburra
Leave some gums for me

Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree
Counting all the monkeys he can see
Stop Kookaburra, stop Kookaburra
That’s no monkey, that’s ME!!!

Black Socks

Black Socks

I remembered this song this morning while doing my laundry and can’t believe I forgot it! It’s typically sung in the round, which means you divide the girls up into usually 2-3 groups (depending on how many leaders or counselors you have to lead each group) and they start at different intervals. For this song, the new group should start singing after the 2nd line is complete.

Black socks, they never get dirty
The longer you wear them the blacker they get.
Some days I think I should launder them
Something keeps telling me don’t do it yet.

Not yet. Not yet. Not yet. Not yet.

My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean

My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean

This is a classic song, and to be honest I don’t remember if I learned it at camp, in Girl Scout meetings, or in school.  I definitely remember singing it at camp though in later years as a Counselor-in-Training there.  At camp this was an excellent song to sing in the morning between the flag ceremony and breakfast to help wake the girls up.  It can also be a great activity to get the girls energized for a meeting. Remember, you sit down or get up (whichever comes next) every time you sing a word that starts with “B”!

My Bonnie lies over the sea
My Bonnie lies over the ocean
So bring back my Bonnie to me

Bring back, Bring back
Bring back my Bonnie to me, to me
Bring back, Bring back
Oh, bring back my Bonnie to me
